What is Arbor Day?

Arbor Day, derived from the Latin word “arbor,” meaning tree, is a global celebration dedicated to planting, maintaining, and appreciating trees. Communities worldwide observe this day in various ways, emphasizing the vital role trees play in our environment and daily lives.

What is Tree City USA?

Tree City USA is a national program that sets the standard for sound urban forestry management. To achieve and maintain Tree City USA status, communities must meet four key criteria annually, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to green spaces and sustainable forestry practices.

In Mocksville, as part of the Arbor Day Festivities and Tree City USA initiative, people of all ages plant trees in a park. Some are digging while others wield shovels and rakes, united in a community effort under sunny skies with grassy grounds and autumn foliage nearby.

A Team Effort

“Thirty-three years as a Tree City USA is an accomplishment our community is proud of. On Arbor Day, we also extend our appreciation to our Parks and Grounds Director, Chris Vaughn, and his team, and our Tree Board, Judith Hinkley, Carl Lambert, Judy Rosser, and Alex Thompson, for their continued dedication to caring for the trees that strengthen our community, “said Human Resources Director/Town Clerk Emily Quance.
