Professional Bike Race Returns to Mocksville ~ NASCAR on 2 Wheels!

13th Annual Giordana Crossroads Classic
July 30 – August 4, 2013

Charlotte Sports Cycling is proud to announce that the 2013 Giordana Crossroads Classic bicycle race and festival will visit four different North Carolina cities July 30 – August 4: Mocksville, Concord, Salisbury, and Statesville. The six-day event brings a plethora of energy to each downtown as professional cyclists from all of the world fill the streets with color, excitement, and speed, as they battle each other in daily bicycle races.

The Giordana Crossroads Classic will be visiting the City of Mocksville on the first night of racing. The Downtown Mocksville Criterium, will take place in downtown Mocksville on Tuesday evening, July 30. Cyclists love Mocksville’s fast, square shaped course as they are able to drive up the speed and allow exciting sprint finishes.

The town also welcomes the event, as many of the downtown restaurants on Main Street extend their store hours to encourage the public to come downtown for an evening of fun. Race director, Neal Boyd, is extremely excited about kicking off the 2013 event in Mocksville. “The City of Mocksville embraces the cycling event and its athletes and provides a tremendous amount of support and energy which helps create an enthusiastic atmosphere for the rest of the five days of racing,” Boyd said.

What is a criterium bike race and why is it exciting?
A criterium style bike race is a circuit race held on downtown streets or in a business park, and is typically less than 1 mile in length with several tight corners. The 80 plus person “peloton” or group of cyclists, will race between 25 and 40 miles, based on their category. These courses are also closed to traffic, which allows the spectators to get up close and personal to the excitement of the race. They are able to witness the strategies of the teams as they draft off each other at speeds of over 40 miles per hour, a breakaway from the main pack, sprint finishes, and the occasional crash! Some have even compared this type of race as the NASCAR on two wheels! The electricity from this type of event is not only felt by the athletes, but by the crowds that come to cheer them on!

The Downtown Mocksville Criterium will kick off Tuesday afternoon July 30 at 6:15 PM, with three amateur events. The races will continue to get faster as the sun sets, as the highlight of the evening, the Pro race starts at 8:45 PM. The Pro event will feature nationally acclaimed teams such as: BMC Development, Mountain Khakis and Giordana-Clif Bar. These races are not for the weak-hearted, as the racers will have to take chances to get out in front, while hitting speeds of up to 45 miles per hour!
This event is not only thrilling to watch, but is a great opportunity for adults and children alike to learn more about one of the fastest growing sports in America. The races are FREE to the public and we will even have FREE races for kids of all ages at 6:45PM. Local vendors will provide entertainment for the kids with their giant inflatable slide, moonwalk, and other festive toys.

Come on out Tuesday evening with the whole family, grab dinner in downtown Mocksville and check out the fast action of the World’s top cyclists! The course start/finish will be located on Main Street near the Courthouse and the cyclists will transverse Main St, Water St, Salisbury St, and Gaither St.
